Meet Donna Hernandez. Donna runs a very successful local law practice in Flower Mound. Donna is very active in the community. She volunteers for several local nonprofits, enjoys spending time with family and friends and is the incoming President of the Cross Timbers Rotary. Donna has a fun spirit and a captivating way when telling a story; she is a member of our community that is fun to know!
Please tell us a little bit about your family. My awesome husband, Tommy, and I have a combined family with 5 boys. My three bio sons are Nick Morris (31, USC BA, Cornell MA) lives in Seattle in commercial real estate development), Jacob Morris (29, BA U of Ark) in medical sales and Jackson Morris (27, UTA BA) in sports equipment sales and married to Hannah. Tommy’s two bio sons are Lawrence Hernandez (27, UNT BA) high school baseball coach married to Alex and Calvin Hernandez (25, ORU BA) works for K Hovnanian Homes.
Please tell us about your current career. Thing you love most about what you do? I primarily practice trial law which means that I handle most everything court related. I focus on civil trial work and family law matters but also do some bankruptcy work. I also do a lot of work with nonprofits taking care of corporate documents and other business matters. I love my work when I know I have made a positive difference in the life of a client and that they appreciate it.
Q: What inspired you to led you to your current career?
A: The honest answer is the potential to make some money and have a good family life. I started college as an athlete planning to coach Women’s basketball. When I looked around at successful women coaches, most made very little money and had terrible family lives.
Q: What is the most unusual job you ever had?
A: One summer during college I worked for a large farm operation where I raked hay, bottle fed baby calves and painted John Deere tractors.
Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community and what do you love to eat/drink there?
A: I’ve been seen quite often at Hillside having the trout or other fish dishes and at Salernos Italian Restaurant eating Mogia salad or Pecan Chicken.
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
A: I moved to Flower Mound in 1993 before we had grocery stores.
Q: Where did you grow up?
A: Weatherford, TX.
Q: Was there anything interesting/challenging/unusual you want to share that shaped you into who you are today?
A: My father died when I was 7 so I was raised by a really strong, independent woman who worked long hours. By age 9, I was cleaning the entire house, doing the laundry and making the meals. It made me pretty independent and there isn’t much that scares me.
Q: Do you have a hobby or interest that you enjoy?
A: I love to play golf and do anything that includes our grown children and their friends.
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
A: Wow, that’s a tough one because we have so many. Everyone has a story and they’re all good if you take time to listen to them.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be? And why?
A: I’d like to cruise the Greek Isles on a small ship. Right now, I’d take the Caribbean.
Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows? What is the first movie you remember seeing in the theater?
A: My favorite is Steel Magnolias but love some of the classic comedies like The Jerk. TV is pretty much limited to binge series (Billions, Succession, Ozark), The Voice and old sitcoms like Seinfeld and Friends. I remember going to the matinee to see some of the early James Bond films as a child.
Q: Where do you love to shop in Flower Mound?
A: Painted Tree is my go-to but I can spend time in Target too. I’m not much of a shopper, except for shoes. I really like shoes!
Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: I’ve tried to hit my bucket list when I can. I already sky-dived and traveled to some really great places. I guess I’d like to see Africa’s wildlife at some point.
Q: What is go-to band when you can’t decide what to listen to?
A: James Taylor, Kacey Musgraves, and Jack Johnson.
Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
A: I’m not very nostalgic but I really want Old Town Lewisville to do well.
Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where would y’all meet for this lunch?
A: I have two. I would love to sit on my front porch with Maya Angelou and Barbara Bush (separately) so I could soak in some of their wisdom and hear what their battles were like. One was born a lower income minority and the other a privileged white child, but each overcame.
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
A: I love that we are large enough to buy what we need when we need it, but small enough to know someone everywhere we go.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
A: Hopefully sitting in a rocker watching a litter of grandchildren playing in my yard.
Q: (Even for friends and family) What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
A: I’m really an introvert who would rather be home most of the time.
Q: What 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
A: I’ve always told my family law clients that a home should always be “a safe place” for everyone, physically and emotionally.
Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
A: The Amalfi Coast.
Q: If you were cast in a movie and could choose your costar, who would it be? Who would you want to play “you”?
A: Diane Keaton is my favorite so she would have to be me. My co-star would be Antonio Banderas starring as Tommy.
Q: Favorite month? holiday? and best single day on the calendar?
A: I like December 23 because that’s the day we celebrate Christmas with all our boys together. The best day is any day I’m sitting in my happy place on a beach with a drink in my hand and a silenced cell phone.
Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
A: My husband and my kids.
Who inspires you to be better?
A: All the younger people in our family. When I’m gone, I hope they say that I was someone they could always depend on.
Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?
A: Cinnamon.
Q: Do you have a hobby or special interest that you enjoy?
A: Books, golf, watching my kids do anything.
Q: Are you involved in anything or any community groups that you really enjoy outside of work and family life?
A: I love my Cross Timbers Rotary Club Family.
Q: What advice would you give a crowd of people (general crowd or crowd of young people)?
A: Live life, don’t miss it.
Q: Do you have a favorite quote or saying?
A: A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.
Q: What 3 words do you think your favorite people would use to describe you?
A: Dependable, Fun and Loving.
Q: If you could have a super power what would it be?
A: I would fly.

A: Before We Were Yours.
